Scorchers winning habit continues after late fightback against Giants. 2nd January 2020
Surrey Scorchers made it four consecutive home victories after rallying from 17 points down to inflict a 94-90 victory over the visiting Manchester Giants at a sold-out Surrey Sports Park on New Year’s Day.
The visitors took the opening quarter by ten points at 30-20. Giants were looking totally unlike a side who had yet to win a BBL Championship game this season after going into the break leading the hosts 52-42, thanks to Edu Argues with 17 points and an 86% record from the free throw line.
Manchester continued to dominate the game after the break, by extending their advantage to 15 points at one stage before Scorchers reduced the lead to nine points at the buzzer 71-62, thanks to 13 points from Devontavius Payne.
Whatever Coach Creon said to the home side seemed to have worked in the final quarter with the Surrey outfit starting the stronger of the two sides. With four minutes remaining Scorchers had cut the lead to only six points after a three-point bucket from Caylin Raftopoulos. The fightback continued with Giants holding a three-point advantage with 2.45 remaining. Lovell Cook had a chance to give Scorchers the lead for the first time in the contest with two free throws, which he duly obliged with to give the home sides a slender one-point advantage with just 92 seconds left.
Raftopoulos eased the nerves of the Scorchers fans by nailing a three-point throw inside the final minute. There was still time for Giants to close the gap to two before a Scorchers turnover amounted to Raftopoulos running in to sink a two-point bucket to win an absorbing contest, and send Surrey Scorchers up to fourth in the table.
Payne finished the evening with 20 points and eight rebounds for Scorchers with Cook picking up 18 points, Raftopoulos 14 and James Hawthorne 17 rebounds alongside 14 points.
For Manchester they were led by Argues with 23 points, Ingus Bankevics 20 points and David Ulph 18 points and 13 rebounds.
