Scorchers hold their nerve to edge out Phoenix in thriller. 22nd December 2019
Surrey Scorchers battled back from a seven-goal deficit in the final quarter to register their third consecutive home win, after completing a narrow 89-88 victory against the visiting Cheshire Phoenix at Surrey Sports Park on Friday.
The visitors made the long trip to Surrey boasting a one hundred per cent record in the BBL Championship but found themselves 25-21 down at the end of the opening quarter thanks to a dominant display from Scorchers Skyler White.
Scorchers held a slender two-point advantage at half-time 44-42, with new signing Devontavius ‘Uno’ Payne scoring his first points in a Scorchers shirt.
Phoenix hit back in the third period thanks to an impressive display from Jalen Haynes, with only a single point separating both sides heading into the final quarter, thanks to some impressive dunks from both James Hawthorne and Tayo Ogedengbe.
With less than five minutes remaining the visitors looked to be heading for victory after opening up a seven-point cushion, but Scorchers had other ideas with Hawthorne and Payne on fire. Inside the final minute the game was on a knife edge with Cheshire leading by one point with 42 seconds to go. A couple of Payne free throws nudged Scorchers in front by one with the home side running down the clock to make it two wins out of three ion the BBL Championship.
Lovell Cook top scored for Surrey with 18 points and seven rebounds with Ogedengbe and White picking up 17 points apiece. For Phoenix, Hayes and Ben Mockford both hit 20 points.
