Nature Valley International. Tuesday 25th June 2019 by Peter Moore
Despite early morning rain, by the time play commenced at the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne the sun broke through with the large crowds treated to some excellent Tennis.
First up on centre court was Britain’s Dan Evans, who resumed his match against Radu Albot, with the Brit taking the match in straight sets 7-6, 6-2.
Second match on centre court saw Britain’s Cameron Norrie put up a superb performance to beat the very experienced Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6.
Local favourite Johanna Konta was also in action on centre court in the women’s event and was up against Greece’s Maria Sakkari- who only last week in Birmingham took a set off the former World Number 1 Naomi Osaka.
The World Number 19 progressed to the third round after a 6-4, 7-6 victory. Despite taking the opening set 6-4, Konta found herself 5-3 down in the second set, however Sakkari failed to serve out for the set as Konta wrapped up victory in a tie-break with a forehand winner.
Konta will next face Ons Jabeur in the third round after the Tunisian defeated Mandy Minella in three sets.
Wimbledon Champion Angelique Kerber also moved into the next round after a straight sets victory 6-4,6-4 over Australian Sam Stosur. The German will now play Rebecca Peterson in the last 16.
Earlier France’s Alize Cornet knocked out the fifth seed Elina Svitolina in straight sets to set up a match against China’s Zhang Shuai.
Dutch third seed Kiki Bertens is also through after seeing off Yulia Putintseva in straight sets.
