Lions edge out Scorchers to reach BBL Cup Q-F’s. 24th November 2019
The BBL Cup South Group stages came to an end on Saturday night with a winner takes all contest between the London Lions and Surrey Scorchers at The Copperbox, with the prize for the winner a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.
On the night it was Lions who took the game 98-87 to book a quarter final match up against Leicester Riders on Friday.
In an even opening quarter the London side led Scorchers by just a single point at the buzzer 20-19 after Scorchers had started the opening period with James Hawthorne picking up ten quick points. The Surrey outfit were dealt a huge blow when Ryan Richards picked up an injury, which narrowed the team down to only six players.
The hosts seized on this advantage and went into the half-time break with an eight point advantage 51-43, leaving Scorchers a lot to do in the remaining two quarters.
Lions increased their lead to 13 points with five minutes remaining of the third quarter, despite Skyler White picking up back to back three-point throws and Marcus White scoring six quick points.
Hawthorne continued picking up points in the final quarter, but the depleted Scorchers line up couldn’t peg Lions back as the hosts ended Scorchers participation in the BBL Cup.
On the night it was Hawthorne who led the way for Scorchers with 25 points and eight rebounds with Skyler White picking up 20 points and eight rebounds. For the home side it was Brandon Peel who was on fire on the night with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
