Lakeside Hammers opened up their home campaign with a 50-40 victory against the Peterborough Panthers in front of a fair size crowd at the Essex Raceway on Friday evening.
The visitors went into the meeting on the back of a fine victory against the Ipswich Witches 24 hours earlier. New Number 1 was the class act on the night with a 14-point haul from five rides. Along with a solid display from the top five which saw them record just one last place all night.
Hammers opened with a 4-2 in the opening heat thanks to a win from Morris and a third place from Ben Morley. Panthers picked up their first heat advantage of the night in heat four, compliments of a win from Ulrich Ostergaard and a point from Captain Simon Lambert, after Alfie Bowtell was excluded for the second time of the night. Ostergaard picked up his second win of the night in heat six with Morris and Morley packing in for second and third. By heat eight, Hammers just had their noses in front to lead 25-23. Ostergaard dropped his first points of the night in the very next heat after being beaten by Kyle Newman. Thanks to another 4-2 heat advantage in heat Ten, Hammers increased their lead to six points. By heat 12 Panthers were forced into using a tactical substitution with their Number One Scott Nicholls replacing reserve Tom Bacon. The switch almost worked, but Nicholla was beaten into first place by a fine ride from Adam Ellis. In the race of the night in heat 13, Morris drew well clear of the field with the battle for the minor placings thought out between Ostergaard, Nicholls and Richard Lawson. The crowd were on their feet as Lawson managed to split Ostergaard and Nicholls to open up an eight-point gap. The victory on the night was secured when Zach Wajtknecht secured a win in heat 14 to secure a valuable win in their Championship Shield Group.
