Surrey Scorchers made it ten home wins in a row, after recording a dramatic 82-81 victory over the Newcastle Eagles at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday.
Tony Hicks secured two free-throws with less than three seconds on the clock to secure the narrowest of victories in front of the Free Sports cameras.
In a tight opening quarter the hosts, who were without the injured Jordan Williams, just shaded the honours, going into the buzzer with a two point advantage at 26-24, thanks to a three-point shot from Caylin Raftopoulos with 30 seconds to go.
Eagles hit back in the second quarter as Amarjit Basi and Darius Defoe scored consistently. The visitors held a narrow four point cushion at half-time to lead 47-42.
The visitors went from strength-to-strength in the third quarter, at one time stretching their lead to 13 points, thanks to an 11 point run. Scorchers hit back strongly, closing out the quarter with a 17-2 run to hold a three point lead going into the final quarter.
In a frantic ten minutes, with the game ebbing and flowing, it was the visitors who led 79-76 with 1.46 to go. With 38 seconds remaining the visitors looked to have secured the points as they led 81-78. But with seconds remaining Hicks was fouled and calmly slotted two out of two free throws to claim a dramatic win for Scorchers.
Tony Hicks top scored for the Surrey based side with 34 points alongside eight rebounds and six assists. Jordan Steele picked up 13 points on the night with captain Tayo Ogedengbe hitting 12 points. The victory now means that Scorchers have won an incredible 14 games out of 18 in 2018.
At the end of the regulation season Surrey Scorchers finished fifth in the BBL Championship table. In the forthcoming play-offs Scorchers will play fourth placed Glasgow Rocks over two legs. The first leg will be at Surrey Sports park this coming Friday 4th May, with a 7.30 tip off, with the return leg back at Glasgow 48 hours later, on Sunday 6th May.
