Brave second half fightback from Scorchers falls short in Championship opener
Surrey Scorchers 72 Leicester Riders 84
BBL Championship Saturday 5th December 2020
Surrey Scorchers opened up their BBL Championship campaign with a narrow loss against the current BBL Champions Leicester Riders at Surrey Sport’s Park on Saturday.
Scorchers put up a spirited second half performance against the reigning champions, but just fell short.
The visiting Riders were looking for their first victory of the new season after suffering a narrow one-point loss to Sheffield Sharks on Friday.
Riders were quickly out of the traps and ended the opening quarter by leading by seven points 21-14.
The second quarter was dominated by Leicester after a trio of three-point shots from the visitors stretched their advantage to a massive 18 points at the interval 46-28.
Scorcher- who haven’t beaten Riders in 24 previous meetings- had it all to do entering the final two quarters. However, Scorchers looked a different outfit in the third period, thanks to a strong display from Captain Tayo Ogedengbe.
Alongside the trio of Martelle McLemore, Caylin Raftopoulos and the impressive rookie Evan Walshe, the hosts cut the gap to 13 points and actually winning the quarter by five points.
But unfortunately, Scorchers left themselves with too much to do in the final period with Riders chalking up the victory.
Captain Ogedengbe led the way for Scorchers with 17 points and Riders picking up double digit points through six of their players.
