Slow start from Scorchers proves costly in Flyers loss. 3rd Nov.2019
Surrey Scorchers suffered a 71-64 defeat at the hands of the visiting Bristol Flyers in the BBL Cup at Surrey Sports Park on Saturday evening.
It was the visitors who flew out of the traps at the start of the match, by racing into a 20-point lead, with only two and a half minutes played. By the time the buzzer had sounded, Scorchers had found themselves behind by 14 points 28-14.
The second quarter found Scorchers gradually getting back into the contest, thanks mainly to both Marcus and Skyler White picking up crucial points to reduce the gap to just eight points at the interval- after at one point facing a 22-point deficit.
It was the hosts who started the second half the stronger of the sides with Henry Wilkins scoring multiple baskets to cut the gap. But yet another run of points nudged the visitors back into the lead once again, this time Flyers went into the final quarter with an 11-point advantage.
A triple from Caylin Raftopoulos and big points from Captain Tayo Ogedengbe helped reduce the lead to just four points with minutes to go, but Flyers held their nerve to complete victory on the night.
Meanwhile, Ryan Richards has re-joined Scorchers on a short-term contract. The former NBA second round draft pick will play for the Surrey outfit for the remainder of the BBL Cup campaign.
